English

Introduction

Communication is critical in all aspects of life; the ability to express oneself both orally and on paper is absolutely essential. No matter what you want to do in life, English can help you succeed.

The English Faculty consists of a departmental suite of four classrooms together with a computer room, stockroom and office located on the second floor of the original building. Two further classrooms can be found on the ground floor, close to the school library.

There are seven full time members of the English team, all of whom carry additional responsibilities. Responsibility within the team itself is held by the Director of Study supported by Co-ordinators at both Key Stages.

All Year 11 pupils are entered for English in November with some pupils being offered the chance to retake the examination in June of the following year. In addition we offer girls the opportunity to take an Adult Literacy qualification with a level 2 pass being the equivalent to half a GCSE at Grade B. GCSE Literature and BTEC Media Studies are also on offer in the final year.

How will English help me in my career?

With the knowledge you have gained from studying English, you will be experienced in working independently and in groups, in analysing and selecting information for specific tasks, in handling problems and new ideas - all highly valued by employers. Such experience equips you for a wide range of courses and careers when you leave Fairfield.

Studying English at degree level and beyond can lead to careers in publishing, teaching, speech therapy, journalism, human resource management, the financial sector (accounting, banking, tax), the Civil Service, local government, airlines, marketing, public relations, retail management, industrial management, information technology services and the arts.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 we are in the process of embedding Assessing Pupil Progress (APP) into our practice to replace the now obsolete SATs.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 it is our aim that every pupil leaves Fairfield with a qualification in English but equally we place great emphasis on building the basic skills of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening to enable girls to function in the real world!
