Homework

Fairfield has a clear policy on the setting of homework, which is available for parents to read if they wish to do so. This defines the principles behind the setting of homework, but does not give guidelines as to the amount of homework that should be set.

With the complexity of the timetable it is not possible to specify different nights of the week for different subjects, but we do provide guidelines as to the number and time allowed for home works. The time will obviously vary depending on the number of lessons in each subject and which Key Stage is involved.

KS3

At KS3 the approximate amount of homework that it would be reasonable to set pupils would be 2hrs each night. If we consider that each session of Homework should take 30min, departments can be divided into three groups based on the number of lesson that they teach. Over a two-week timetable this should be the equivalent of:

4 Sessions 2 Sessions 1 Sessions
English
Mathematics
Science
Languages
Technology
Art
Music
History
Geography
Life Skills
ICT
RS
PE
Drama

KS4

At KS4 the approximate amount of homework could reasonably be expected to increase to 3hrs each night. Based on 30min sessions the allocation over two weeks would be the equivalent of:

2 Sessions 6 Sessions 8 Session
ICT
PE
RS
All other subjects Double Science
Applied Science
Single Sciences (Total)
Leisure and Tourism

Parents are reminded that these allocations are guidelines and the homework that your daughter receives should average out to approximately these amounts over the year. It may however be the case, especially at KS4 that pupils are given more or less homework as the demands of coursework etc vary. It should not be usual for staff to expect homework to be handed in on the day following when it was set, which should allow pupils to manage their time so that they are not overburdened on any particular night. Pupils should be recording all the homework that they are set in their Fairfax.
